With the old food pyramid, there are four food groups illustrated and stacked on top of one another. The biggest food group is on the bottom and this is cereal, rice, pasta, and bread. This is what you should eat most of. Next up are fruit and vegetables. On top of that, you have meat, dairy, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts. At the very top, the item you should eat the least of, is fats. The food pyramid shows how much of each food type you should eat each day.

The new food pyramid uses vertical rainbow colored stripes to indicate the different food groups and it tells you how many cups or ounces per day you should have rather than how many servings like on the old food pyramid. Most people would not know how much a "serving" should be, so this does simplify things.

Is it Important to Follow the Food Pyramid?

The new food pyramid encourages a balanced diet, which is something that all healthcare professionals agree upon. Your body needs a combination of grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat or poultry to function properly. It is possible to eat healthily on a vegetarian diet or vegan diet but you will need to make substitutions, such as eating beans or tofu instead of meat or poultry.

Everything in Moderation

There are no banned foods on the food pyramid but you should eat more grains than fruit and more dairy products than oils and butter. If you are a lover of fried chicken recipes, you can make them but not every single day. Chicken is lean and healthy and oils are essential to the body.

You might want to make your favorite fried chicken batter recipe and serve the fried chicken with vegetables or a green salad to make it more balanced. Alternatively, you can eat grains, fruit, vegetables, and dairy for lunch and enjoy fried chicken for dinner. You can be healthy and enjoy the tastiest foods at the same time.

Banning all fried food or sugars from your diet is going to make you feel deprived. Eating everything in moderation is good for you and is also enjoyable. Unless your doctor has given you a special dietary plan for health reasons, the saying "a little of what you fancy does you good" is very true and the body is sophisticated enough to extract the nutrients out of what you eat to use and send the waste on its way.

The main thing to know about the new food pyramid is that it encourages you to eat a balanced diet. "Balanced" does not mean a fried chicken in one hand and a pound of French fries in the other but it does mean that eating a wide range of foods is good for you.
